1/4 cup cornstarch
2 cups water

How-To
The first step in finger painting is creating the finger paint. You can make your own by mixing ¼ cup of cornstarch with 2 cups of water and ½ teaspoon of food coloring all in a saucepan. Boil the ingredients until the mixture thickens. Allow the paint to cool before storing the paint in an airtight container. Kids can help mixing the ingredients together, but the boiling of the paint should be done by the provider. Kids shouldn’t eat the finger paint, but because we’re making it using cornstarch and food coloring, our finger paint is safe, in case any kids do ingest it.

Next, make sure to cover your table with a protective cloth because this activity can get really messy. No matter how many children you have, each child should get their own brown paper bag or sheet of butcher paper, which will serve as their canvas. Tape down the bags for each child so they don’t slide all over the place.

Provide the three primary colors (red, blue and yellow) in pie tins or containers so kids can use them to mix new colors. Put a dab of paint on the bag for each child to start, then let them pick their own colors. Instruct them how they can paint with their fingers using a circular motion. Infants will only be able to rub their hands in the paint. For older kids, you can instruct them to paint something more specific according to a theme, like animals or places. Try to make the activity as open-ended as possible.

Remember, routines should be balanced with quiet time and active time. This art activity is great for calming kids down. Let’s say your kids have been outside running around. When they come in, this will help soothe and relax them.
